First proof one peso (piso) coin of the Republic, designed by Frank Gasparro. The obverse features the bust of Dr. Jose Rizal, ( considered a national hero ) a nationalist during the tail end of the Spanish colonial period./ “Piso” mark. The reverse bears the mintage year , bank and country’s coat of arms featuring the eight-rayed sun, representing the eight provinces then: The three five-pointed stars representing the primary geographic regions (Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.) On the dexter [L] side of the shield is the American bald eagle . It’s left talon grasping an olive branch and the right talon grasps three spears, denoting peace and war. On the sinister [R] side is the lion rampant of the coat of arms of the Kingdom of León (part of a united Spain from 1479). Both represents the countrys colonial past.
